<Editor’s Note> I’m very excited to introduce you all to Stephanie Trinh aka @stef_funny! She’s the newest member of my team here at Marketing Melodie. She’s an ambitious Business Marketing Student at SDSU, is filled with positive energy and is even a fellow marketing nerd! I’ll let Stephanie take it from here. HIT IT STEPHANIE! </Editor’s Note>
I’ve recently just started really using my Foursquare account and I had a ton of questions for Melodie. Why should a business have a Foursquare account? What is the point of Foursquare when I can just check-in on Facebook? Apparently, I had much to learn so I’d like to share a few awesome things I recently learned about Foursquare.
Foursquare is a location-based social network used mostly on mobile devices. You use your smart phone to check-in at the venue you’re currently at. Check ins can earn you a new badge, points (that I still don’t know what they’re good for) and some businesses offer special deals when you check-in at their venues. With Foursquare, you can simultaneously post on Facebook and Twitter, something that checking in just on Facebook doesn’t allow. Facebook check-ins which I have been using offer none of these, only a new status update to show your friends where you’re at so I was happy to learn about the foursquare benefits.
As a business, you wouldn’t necessarily create a Foursquare account to be part of the fun. You would claim your business instead. Once the business is claimed, business owners can add specials to help bring in more traffic to the business location. One thing that businesses should keep in mind is that when a special is created, employees need to be aware of the special. This helps avoid confusion when a customer comes in and shows them the unlocked special. It makes the experience less frustrating for the consumer.
I found this Foursquare comedy skit on YouTube, and I thought it was funny so I wanted to share. Also, I drive a Toyota Camry and I noticed that the car the guys are driving is a Camry! Enjoy. 🙂
I have a huge announcement to make here at Marketing Melodie and I’m beyond excited!…
I’m headed to Austin and SXSW for the first time!
I just confirmed my flight and my conference ticket! I have always, always, ALWAYS wanted to go but the right opportunity just hadn’t come along yet, until NOW! This is the law of attraction working its magic! Yep the universe has once again proven to me that if I put something out there, it will come back to me. As I like to say “Ask (Social Media) and You Shall Receive!” I’ll be flying out of San Diego on March 8th and attending the entire Interactive portion until March 13th!
Social Media has allowed me to travel the world! From international hot spots such as Hong Kong to Beirut Lebanon to amazing cities such as Las Vegas and San Fransisco, it’s proof that Social Media is the real deal! And now I’m attending the largest interactive festival in Austin, Texas! I was approached by AT&T to run a Social Media promotion for them at SXSW. When I asked how they found me, they replied “We found you on Twitter and Klout”. Although I’ve received many awesome Klout Perks, this is the first time someone has actually mentioned it while hiring me.
If you’re going to SXSW you’ll want to make sure to follow me on Twitter @MyMelodie. I’ll be live tweeting with the AT&T hashtag (will be posted soon), checking in everywhere on Foursquare, posting photos on Facebook and giving you cool prizes when you find me! I’m also offering additional surprises for AT&T customers! On top of that I’ll be participating in a bunch of awesome promos, be filmed in an AT&T video and attending all the hottest SXSW events. The best part is that I get to meet so many awesome people in the tech and interactive space!
Oh and here’s a FUN FACT that I bet you didn’t know about me! While Southern California is my home and it’s where I grew up, I was actually born in Texas! Dallas, Texas to be exact! I only lived there for less than a year so don’t remember it but that still makes me a Texas native! I have family who live in both Austin and Dallas that I’ll get to see during my trip!
Please make sure you hit me up if you plan on going to SXSW! If you have any pro tips for a first timer on what to do, where to eat, etc, I would love to hear from you too!

A few weeks ago I had the honor of visiting some of my favorite people in Los Angeles aka LA LA Land aka the City of Angels- the place that’s so close yet so far away! The lovely @JenFriel and @ItsMeJoolie hosted me and I got to catch up with the rest of the Talk Nerdy to Me Lover (TNTML) crew! They adventured down to San Diego a few months back and we had an amazing time talking nerdy in San Diego!
I’ve been meaning to make my way up to LA for a while so when Jen announced that she was launching her very first live show: Talk Nerdy To Me Lover- The Dirty Truth About Nerdy Girls, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to make the trip up.
I love how even though I don’t get to see my TNTML friends in real life (IRL) often we still keep up with each other’s lives and know what’s going on thanks to social media and the community we’ve built! When I arrived at Jen’s place, she was hoping in the shower so handed me the remote. I immediately switched to the Food Network. She came out and said “of course you’re watching Food Network”. An hour later, Julie comes home and sees Food Network on TV, same comment “Ha, you’re watching Food Network”. Yep they both know I’m addicted to food porn just from reading my post. Oh and I was so excited to see the LIME GREEN WALL! I’ve read all about the lime green wall at Jen and Julie’s but got to experience it in real life!
Other highlights of my Adventures in LA include: Dinner at Grub with @MegCorbs, @iamrachelwho, @HeatherBorges. The food was great! Comfort food with a fresh twist! They have awesome potato chocolate chip cookies we enjoyed for dessert. But better than the food was our conversations!
Dinner consisted of nerding out over Foursquare, Twitter, Social Media jobs and the Facebook page created by @iamrachelwho, Nothing Rhymes with Orange! We brainstormed some ideas on growing the community and taking it to the next level! But seriously if you haven’t seen this page, it’s one of my favorite humor pages.
After dinner we walked over to the Little Modern Theater to see Jen in her first live show! I’m so proud of her for making this happen. The show started with dramatic interpretations of OKCupid emails, then the dirty truth about nerdy girls! I can definitely can see this show taking off because it was such a great production that was real, raw, authentic and everything was created with passion! Of course it was also interactive with a Twitter board for people to tweet questions during the show via the hashtag #nerdsunite.
I see Jen and Julie checking into Barney’s Beanery all the time, so told Jen that I definitely wanted her to take me there during my visit to see where all the magic happens. To my delight, she scheduled the after party there! A good time was had with everyone in the TNTML community!
Before leaving LA the next day I had an opportunity to take a yoga class with Julie! You guys all know that I’m extremely passionate about my yoga practice. Julie and I both nerd out over yoga all the time so we found a class time at her studio that worked out perfectly.
I had such a great time during my short visit to LA. Hanging out with everyone just made me appreciate social media so much more since it keeps me connected to everyone that I can’t see in person all the time. I’m definitely looking forward to more adventures in 2012. So much greatness has already happened this year with social media fueling my awesome experiences!
As I’ve made reference to before, Marketing is my expertise, but yoga is my passion! Yoga helps me with my balance, flexibility, strength, mental clarity and these benefits extend far beyond just my mat. Balancing poses teach me how to balance my life with both my career and personal life. Creating more flexibility on the mat teaches me how to be more flexible and adaptive for my business in an ever changing digital world. The strength I build in my poses, teaches me to build a strong foundation to handle any stressful situations that may come my way. The mental clarity I gain does wonders for every aspect of my life and really helps me stay present. Wow, I truly experience some amazing benefits from my yoga practice both on and off the mat.
Before creating and sharing What Social Media Experts Actually Do I actually created one for yogis. I use several memes within the meme as a fun way to describe What Yogis Actually Do! Although this is not entirely true, I personally find it quite amusing!
Please feel free to share, enjoy and if you’d like to see more memes, you can join my new Facebook Community, Social Media Memes.
Internet memes are a fun sensation that I definitely get a kick out of, especially memes I can relate to. I love memes because they really demonstrate how powerful Social Media is in spreading messages.
The “Shit Says” Meme hit the internet by storm! In fact I’m still getting tweets about the Shit Social Media Experts Say video I created a month ago!
And since I already told you about all the Shit Social Media Experts Say, I figure it’s only appropriate that you know what we actually do! Thus I present you with What Social Media Expert Actually Do! Yep the “What (fill in the occupation) Actually Do” meme has caught on fire and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to create one! Please enjoy and feel free to share! You can also join the Facebook community I created: Social Media Memes. I want this page to eventually be fueled by user generated memes.
Oh and please note, I in no way consider or call myself a “Social Media Expert”, everyone knows that I’m a Social Media Guru ;)! Ok all jokes aside this title is used for humor purposes! I’m a Marketing professional who has a lot of experience in Social Media and Digital Technology. I understand how to integrate these tools into your marketing plan to help you grow your business and sometimes people call me a “Social Media Expert”!
