Legoland Celebrates the Inauguration: Win Free Tickets!

January 21, 2009 16

I don’t have concrete statistics to prove this statement but I’m pretty confident when I say that theme park attendance is down! With the economic crisis in full effect families are coming up with more cost effective leisure activities. Paying $50-$70 per admission ticket to any theme park is no longer an option. Theme parks are fully aware of the recession and most are doing their to best offer annual membership specials, birthday promotions and adding new attractions to draw in visitors. This is the time for their Marketing Department to step it up and utilize the power of the internet to increase exposure, gain publicity and showcase their attractions. If you work at a Theme Park and are reading this then please feel free to contact me for ideas!

I commend Legoland for doing a great job launching their Presidential Inauguration exhibit just in time to correspond with the Inauguration in Washington DC. In honor of the new President I’m giving away a pair of Legoland tickets so you can go see the inauguration exhibit for yourself!

  1. I’d have to say the San Diego Zoo is my favorite because of all the animals there. I love photography so I usually bring my camera to create some new photos to hang up.

  2. In San Diego we love Sea World. It’s a nice sized park but not too big. The animal shows are always entertaining as well as the special shows they bring in. Outside San Diego it has to be Disneyland because there’s something for each member of our family. Disney has a great idea of getting in free on your birthday. I think other parks would do well to adopt the same strategy.

  3. Theme parks for me are about family fun. So anything the park does to enhance my time with family will drive value for me. And in this economy, I think we’re all looking for value–is the expense justified.

So for the drive market, for instance, a theme park might offer a gas card to people within a few hours drive.

Or bundling deals that include food at the park and therefore reduce the overall cost of the experience.

Last thought is to bring in special guests or celebrities for performances that give me even more for my family’s time and money. So, having the High School the Musical cast do a performance and autograph signings, the Jonas Brothers shoot a music video and call people to the park as extras that day, or bring in an extreme sport demonstration and athletes etc.

  4. Melanie- I also like the birthday promotion! Everyone loves special treatment on their birthday! And no one going to a theme park on their birthday will go alone so if you give 1 free entry than you’re sure to get others to attend with paid admissions.

Julie- I love your idea for bundle deals with food! I haven’t heard of a theme park do this yet but I know ballparks do it and offer drinks and hot dogs with your ticket. It always seems to create a buzz and attract bigger groups/families to attend.

  5. My favorite local theme park would have to be Wild Animal Park. I love the safari tram ride, and I can’t wait to go back again. Unfortunately, you never know when the temperature is going to be suitable. It was 94 degrees there, last week!

  6. I am a member (for 3 more days) at the San Diego Zoo – which means access to the Wild Animal Park AND the Zoo. I love it! My sweetie and I used to go weekly when I lived on Golden Hill.

I would be stoked if the SD Zoo offered a blogger program. In exchange for blogging about the Zoo (good, bad, indifferent) offer bloggers some sort of discount for membership or something.

Even better – offer free wifi at the zoo. The zoo would be my number one choice of places to bring my laptop if they had internet access. Since the money the zoo makes on concessions goes back to supporting the zoo, having a bunch of folks camping out and drinking zoo coffee and eating ice cream might help bring in some extra dough as well 🙂

  7. As author of the Unauthorized Legoland Guidebook I would have to say that one of my favorite themeparks is Legoland. It is much more interactive than most themeparks. I love that kids get a chance to create with Legos, not just ride rides. The play areas for big and little kids encourage movement and exercise. Their special events are really fun. Our Fav is Lego Starwars Day.

I also have some thoughts about how Legoland could improve their marketing and promotion. Other than that smart Inaguration “stunt” they don’t often leverage the internet as much as they could. Their website is very difficult to navigate, one of the reasons I wrote the book. They are also almost overly protective about their brand. They have very specific rules about how to write about Lego bricks (they have specific words they want your to use). They discourage using certain suposedly proprietary colors on your site and publishing pictures. Disneyland has a whole department that reaches out to Guidebook writers and travel writers. Until my book, as far as I know there has not been a dedicated guidebook to Legoland. When I contacted Legoland to look for assistance and collaboration, the actively discouraged me from pursuing the project, hence the care I take in making my guidebook Unauthorized. I think that Legoland is missing a real opportunity. They have a great park, and most of their potential fans and visitors are youngish internet Savy families with some disposable income. They should be encouraging people to write about their park, publish pictures of it, and generally spread the word about what a great place it is for families of young children.

  8. Faryl- Love your idea on places offering blogger programs. As the power of blogs has grown, bloggers have revolutionized the PR industry. I remember when getting your press release to the public almost impossible with the media outlets having power to pick and choose what they publish. Now if you’re a blogger with a strong following you’re such a powerful resource to the companies you choose to blog about. Once more theme parks and businesses in general realize this I can see them incorporating blogger programs into their marketing campaign. Free wi-fi at the zoo would be awesome too!

Bridget- I agree that Legoland is restricting themselves by being overly protective. Many still don’t understand the positive power of having your audience post photos, blogs etc. That’s awesome that you wrote a guidebook I’d be interested in reading it sometime!

  9. I agree with some of the other folks, here. The cost of entrance is already so prohibitive, not to mention the cost I am going to spend once I am in- it’s just too much for me to spend these days. I am a regular at SeaWorld. We bought our tickets at CostCo (very cheaply) and we can go as much as we want all year round. Bonuses: If we bring our commemorative cups, we get cheaper refills, free parking and discounted food. Plus- the shows change all the time, so it’s always a new experience for my daughter.

I love Disneyland’s “free on your birthday” promo, too. Of course, you still have to pay for the rest of your family- but you FEEL like you’re getting something free. 🙂

Disneyland also does the 2-fer deal every spring for Southern CA residents. (Where you can see both parks for the price of one, on 2 different days in the span of one month.) I think a lot of families take advantage of that.

In these times, taking these day-trips is last priority for families. It’s sad, but rent, clothes, food, car payments- these things hold more focus than ever before. Parks need to make entrance more accessible than ever before and count on making money once families are inside the park. I hope this way of living passes soon… but until it does, these Disneyland/Legoland trips are going to become more of an annual tradition than a “hey- what do you want to do this weekend,” last minute thing.

    My 2 cents. 🙂
