5 Ways to Achieve Show-Stealing Greatness

October 29, 2015 2

Having great teachers plays a key role in running a successful marketing business. In order for me to be at the top of my game, I align myself with other accomplished business leaders. I make it an absolute priority to invest in my own professional development. Two leaders that I recently had the privilege of learning from are Lewis Howes and Michael Port. I attended their masterclass, Show-Stealing Greatness at the Los Angeles Theatre Center earlier this month. It was a full day of being inspired, making connections and learning how to speak with integrity.

Many of you know that I do my best to share main takeaways from events I attend such as with my Facebook Boost Your Business and Google’s Put Your Business on the Map recaps. Even if you can’t attend, you can learn vicariously through me! This event is one I’m especially excited to share about, so here goes, 5 ways to achieve show-stealing greatness.

What I learned from Lewis Howes:

Lewis Howes School of Greatness Book with Marketing Melodie1. How to create a successful book launch– I have every intention of writing a book. The event titled itself, “Show-Stealing Greatness” is a fusion of Michael’s new book, Steal the Show and Lewis’ new book, The School of Greatness. A huge part of this event was to promote their upcoming books. I’m on Lewis’ list and he combined the event price with buying 10 copies of his book. He also offered a VIP package which included buying 100 copies of his book. There were almost 200 people at the event, so in this one day, he sold thousands of books weeks before the launch (which was October 27th, congrats Lewis!). I love the idea of packaging the book with a live event. Next time you launch a book, make sure pre-selling it at a live event is part of your strategy.

2. “People don’t care about how much you know, until they know how much you care”– This is my favorite quote (I like to call it a quotable) from the event. It’s true and important to keep in mind, especially when connecting with influencers. The best way to connect with an influencer is to provide value to them and demonstrate how much you truly care about their work. Make it clear that you aren’t asking for anything when you first connect. Do whatever you can to promote them. Once they get to know you and know that you really do care, you will have more of a chance to develop a personal relationship.

What I learned from Michael Port (Fun fact: Michael was on Sex and the City!):

3. Practice presentations like a dress rehearsal- Michael is an award-winning actor so he knows a thing or two about dress rehearsals. I love how he incorporates what he learned as an actor to be a world class public speaker. I practice all of my talks before I present them live,  but I usually do it sitting in front of my computer. I never thought to do it as if it actually were live! I learned how important it is to dress in the same types of clothes and shoes you will present in because this allows you get used to what the actual presentation will feel like. It’s also important to stand and move around the room as if you are speaking to a live audience.

4. Use the power of pausing to emphasize points– Speakers are often told to slow down their pace because they are talking too fast. I learned from Michael that pausing to emphasize important points in the presentation is much more effective than slowing down your speech. He gave clear examples of how he would talk fast, but also have everyone understand every word he is saying by using pauses in between. I love this tip, because I tend to talk fast. It’s good to know that I can do it, and still be clear with my message.

What I learned from both Lewis and Michael:

5. How to sell at the end of a presentation– We are all trying to sell something. You are kidding yourself if you say you’re not. Even if you work for someone else, you still have to sell yourself as a person others want to work with. Lewis and Michael demonstrated how to seamlessly transition from teaching and speaking to selling. They presented a combo package for their courses at the end and taught us how important it is to let your audience know that your intention for selling is to create added value for what they just learned. They also created urgency with the product by offering a special price that was only available at the event. It’s important to sell by making sure you are adding value.

There you have it, 5 ways to achieve show-stealing greatness with Lewis Howes and Michael Port. I still have a copy of Lewis Howes’ The School of Greatness to give away, so if you want to enter to win, leave me a comment!

  1. Melodie, you’ve already given me so much, I’m not going to ask you for anything else! Thank you for sharing this. These are great tips. Whoever wins this book, if you won’t mind letting me borrow it when you’re done, we can each share what we got out of it once we get on the same page (pun intended). For me, sharing knowledge is the best way to solidify it.

    • Thanks for reading the post Laura! I’m glad you found the tips helpful. I can let you borrow my copy next time we connect or there is a special on Amazon right now too if you want it sooner. Thanks again for your support!
